Bring a Local — Bruges Get your pass

Bruges in one day — a local's perfect itinerary

Only have a day? Bruges is small and walkable, so you can see the best of it without rushing. Here's how a local would spend it, morning to evening.

The whole historic centre fits inside a 30-minute walk, so the trick isn't speed — it's order. Do the famous squares early before the crowds, save the quiet east side for the afternoon, and end by the water at golden hour.

Morning

9:00 — Start at the Markt & climb the Belfry

Arrive at the Market Square before the day-trippers. Climb the Belfry's 366 steps first thing — the queue is shortest in the morning and the rooftop view sets up your whole day.

Morning

10:30 — The Burg & the Basilica of the Holy Blood

A two-minute walk from the Markt, the Burg square holds the ornate Town Hall and the basilica with Bruges' famous relic. Small, atmospheric, quick to see.

Late morning

11:15 — Rozenhoedkaai & a canal cruise

The city's most photogenic corner. From here you can hop on a short boat tour — the best way to understand how the canals stitch Bruges together.

Lunch

12:30 — Lunch off the main square

Step one or two streets back from the Markt for better food and fairer prices. Go for moules-frites, a hearty Flemish stew, or a simple cone of fries done properly.

Afternoon

14:00 — Church of Our Lady & the Begijnhof

See Michelangelo's "Madonna and Child" in the Church of Our Lady, then walk south to the hushed, tree-filled courtyard of the Begijnhof.

Afternoon

15:00 — Minnewater & the quiet lanes

Stroll the willow-lined Lake of Love, then wander east into the residential streets where Bruges finally goes quiet — the part most visitors never reach.

Late afternoon

16:30 — The windmills on the ramparts

Follow the old earthen ramparts to the row of historic windmills. A breezy, local-feeling walk and a good place to slow down.

Evening

18:30 — Sunset by the canals, then dinner

Circle back toward Rozenhoedkaai and the Markt as the light turns gold and the crowds thin. Then settle in for dinner and a local Belgian beer.

A local's tip: the famous spots are magical at 8am and after 6pm, and crowded in between. Plan your photos for the edges of the day and use the busy midday hours for lunch, a museum, or the quiet east side.
